Advanced Sight-Reading & Theory
Position playing, barre chords, higher positions, arpeggios, CAGED and full score reading to an advanced level.
One device at a time. Your course can only be active on one device at a time — you can't be on a laptop or tablet and a phone at the same time. To switch, log out and log in on the other device: all your progress is saved to your account, not the device, so you carry on exactly where you left off.
Stave and TAB: as a guitarist, you should be able to read notes off a stave and on TAB. This course shows you both, side by side, so you learn the differences between them.
Suggested practice schedule
One lesson a week finishes the course in 10 weeks. Little and often works best: 15–30 minutes a day, six days a week.
Sun · New lesson
Work through the next lesson and its play-along (20 – 30 mins).
Mon · Practice
Warm up, then the lesson's practice steps: finger warm-up, scales in different positions and reading TAB with notation (20 mins).
Tue · Theory
Check-yourself quizzes and Music Terms flashcards (15 mins).
Wed · Play along
Loop the tricky bars at a slower tempo, then speed up (20 mins).
Thu · Review
Re-read the lesson's music without stopping and retake the knowledge check (15 mins).
Fri · Record
Record a take of the play-along and send it to Jason (15 mins).
Sat · Rest
Rest day — or a relaxed 10 minutes playing something you enjoy.
Busy week? Do Sunday's lesson and two practice days, and move on when you pass the knowledge check.

Not sure where to start?
This course covers Intermediate → Advanced. If you're already confident reading at intermediate level, you may prefer Foundations of Reading Music (Beginner → Intermediate). Both syllabuses are free to preview before you buy.
Recommended for you: best if you can already name notes on the staff and read simple rhythms. If reading is still new to you, begin with Foundations of Reading Music first, then come back here.
Melody first. The melody is the most important part of any song — it's what people remember and sing along to. Every lesson in this course shows you how to read, hear and support the melody, whether you're singing it, playing it or accompanying it.

Position Playing & Shifting
Reading beyond first position
Playing in positions lets you read the same notes higher up the neck; shifting moves smoothly between them.
Barre Chords & Symbols
Movable shapes & chord names
Barre chords use one finger across the strings to make movable shapes; chord symbols (Am7, G/B) tell you exactly what to build.
Higher Positions & Ledger Lines
Reading above the staff
High guitar notes sit on ledger lines above the staff; guitar sounds an octave lower than written to keep them readable.
Intervals & Double Stops
Two notes at once
A double stop is two notes played together — reading intervals like 3rds and 6ths lets you harmonise melodies instantly.
Arpeggios & Triads on the Neck
Chord tones across strings
Seeing triads (root-3rd-5th) across the fretboard lets you read arpeggios and improvise over any chord.
Slash & Rhythm Charts
Reading pro session charts
Session guitarists read rhythm charts: slashes for strum rhythm, chord symbols on top, and rhythmic hits notated precisely.
Key Signatures & CAGED
Organising the fretboard
The CAGED system links five open-chord shapes to map any key across the whole neck, making reading in any key manageable.
Advanced Rhythm
16ths, triplets & syncopation
Advanced guitar rhythm mixes sixteenths, triplets and syncopated accents on the off-beats for funk and jazz feels.
Classical Multi-Voice Notation
Reading two voices at once
Classical guitar writes melody and bass on one staff, with stems up for the melody and stems down for the bass line.
Full Sight-Reading
Notation, TAB, chords together
The finish line: read melody, chords and rhythm from a full guitar score at first sight, in steady time.
