Advanced Sight-Reading & Theory
Linear grooves, rudiments, odd meters, double bass, polyrhythms and full chart sight-reading — with advanced theory: every key, intervals, chords, cadences, irregular time and musical terms — to an advanced standard.
One device at a time. Your course can only be active on one device at a time — you can't be on a laptop or tablet and a phone at the same time. To switch, log out and log in on the other device: all your progress is saved to your account, not the device, so you carry on exactly where you left off.
Stave and drum score: as a drummer, you should be able to read drum score and know how it relates to the stave. This course shows you both, side by side, so you learn the differences between them.
Suggested practice schedule
One lesson a week finishes the course in 10 weeks. Little and often works best: 15–30 minutes a day, six days a week.
Sun · New lesson
Work through the next lesson and its play-along (20 – 30 mins).
Mon · Practice
Warm up, then the lesson's practice steps: rudiments on a pad, grooves with a metronome and reading drum charts (20 mins).
Tue · Theory
Check-yourself quizzes and Music Terms flashcards (15 mins).
Wed · Play along
Loop the tricky bars at a slower tempo, then speed up (20 mins).
Thu · Review
Re-read the lesson's music without stopping and retake the knowledge check (15 mins).
Fri · Record
Record a take of the play-along and send it to Jason (15 mins).
Sat · Rest
Rest day — or a relaxed 10 minutes playing something you enjoy.
Busy week? Do Sunday's lesson and two practice days, and move on when you pass the knowledge check.

Not sure where to start?
This course covers Intermediate → Advanced. If you're already confident reading at intermediate level, you may prefer Foundations of Reading Music (Beginner → Intermediate). Both syllabuses are free to preview before you buy.
Recommended for you: best if you can already name notes on the staff and read simple rhythms. If reading is still new to you, begin with Foundations of Reading Music first, then come back here.
Melody first. The melody is the most important part of any song — it's what people remember and sing along to. Every lesson in this course shows you how to read, hear and support the melody, whether you're singing it, playing it or accompanying it.

Sixteenth-Note & Linear Grooves
Funk grooves & linear patterns
Linear grooves never play two voices at once — each note is a single limb, weaving kick, snare and hats into intricate funk.
Triplets & Shuffle Feel
Swinging the eighths
A triplet fits three even notes in one beat; the shuffle plays the first and third of each triplet for a swung feel.
Reading Rudiments
Paradiddles, flams & stickings
Rudiments are the alphabet of drumming — sticking patterns like the paradiddle (RLRR LRLL) written with R/L under the notes.
Odd Time Signatures
5/4 and 7/8 grooves
Odd meters group beats unevenly — 7/8 is often felt as 3+2+2 or 2+2+3, giving music a lopsided drive.
Double Bass Reading
Two kick voices
Double bass drumming adds a second pedal, letting you read rapid alternating kick patterns beneath the groove.
Polyrhythms
Three against two
A polyrhythm layers two different pulses at once — like 3 notes in one hand against 2 in the other.
Chart Road Maps
Repeats, D.C., D.S. & codas
Full charts use navigation symbols — repeat signs, D.C. al Fine, D.S. al Coda — to route you through the arrangement.
Jazz Ride & Comping
Swing on the ride cymbal
Jazz drumming rides the swing pattern on the cymbal while comping (accompanying) with snare and kick 'in the cracks'.
Advanced Fills & Orchestration
Fills across the whole kit
Advanced fills orchestrate ideas around the whole kit — mixing snare, toms, cymbals and kick into musical phrases.
Full Chart Sight-Reading
Reading real drum charts
The finish line: read groove, fills, dynamics and road map together at first sight, keeping rock-solid time.
